William Tyndale’s translation of Romans 12:1-3 varies a little from the King James Bible, but there’s not a huge difference. I especially was struck by Tyndale’s turn of phrase in verse 2: “be ye changed in your shape, by the renewing of your wits…”. The King James Bible has: “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Both translations are very understandable and convey the same message — just in slightly different wording. Sometimes it is good to read a verse in more than one translation.
I need to be busy, myself, in “changing my shape by renewing my wits.” One good way to renew our minds is by studying the Bible and getting God’s Word inside our hearts. I am currently using the Professor Grant Horner Bible Reading Plan. I think it is one of the best. You can easily find more about this plan by doing a web search.
Romans 12:1-3 – TYNDALE’S NEW TESTAMENT, 1534
[1] I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercifulness of God, that ye make your bodies a quick sacrifice holy and acceptable unto God which is your reasonable serving of God.
[2] And fashion not yourselves like unto this world: But be ye changed in your shape, by the renewing of your wits that ye may feel what thing that good, that acceptable, and perfect will of God is.
[3] For I say (through the grace that unto me given is) to every man among you that no man esteem of himself more than it becometh him to esteem: but that he discreetly judge of himself, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
