02 Daily Verse / 1534 Tyndale NT / Beatitudes (Matt 5:1-16)

Today’s Bible Verse is from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, verses 1 to 16. These verses are some of the most widely known verses in the New Testament, and rightly so, since this is the beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

The verses below (Matthew 5:10-12) may have been especially poignant to William Tyndale since he was persecuted and slandered by the English government and church authorities and would eventually be killed in October 1536 for the work he was doing.

5:10 “Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5:11 Blessed are ye when men revile you and persecute you and shall falsely say all manner of evil sayings against you for my sake. 5:12 Rejoice and be glad for great is your reward in heaven. For so persecuted they the Prophets which were before your days.”

When he sawe the people he went up into a mountayne and when he was set his disciples came to hym and he opened hys mouthe and taught them sayinge:

Blessed are the poure in sprete: for theirs is the kyngdome of heven.
Blessed are they that morne: for they shalbe comforted.
Blessed are the meke: for they shall inheret the erth.
Blessed are they which honger and thurst for rightewesnes: for they shalbe filled.
Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obteyne mercy.
Blessed are the pure in herte: for they shall se God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shalbe called the chyldren of God.

Blessed are they which suffre persecucion for rightwesnes sake: for theirs ys the kyngdome of heuen.

Reioyce and be glad for greate is youre rewarde in heven. For so persecuted they the Prophetes which were before youre dayes.

Ye are ye salt of the erthe: but and yf the salt have lost hir saltnes
what can be salted ther with? It is thence forthe good for nothynge but to be cast oute and to be troaden under fote of men.

Ye are the light of the worlde. A cite yt (that) is set on an hill cannot be hid nether do men lyght a candell and put it under a busshell but on a candelstick and it lighteth all that are in the house.

Let youre light so shyne before men yt (that) they maye se youre good workes and glorify youre father which is in heven.

01 Today’s Bible Verse is 1st Timothy 6:17-19. It is quoted from the 1534 William Tyndale New Testament (a revision of Tyndale’s 1526 New Testament).

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not exceeding wise, and that they trust not in the uncertain riches, but in the living God, which giveth us abundantly all things to enjoy them, and that they do good and be rich in good works, and ready to give and to distribute, laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come that they may obtain, eternal life.

Obey Men or God? Peter and John’s Answer (Acts 4:18-22)

From Acts 4:18–22 (Tyndale New Testament, 1526):

[18] And they called them, and commanded them that in no wise they should speak or teach in the name of Jesus.

[19] But Peter and John answered unto them and said: whether it be right in the sight of God, to obey you more then God, judge ye.

[20] For we cannot but speak that which we have seen and heard.

[21] So threatened they them and let them go, and found nothing how to punish them, because of the people: For all men lauded God for the miracle which was done.

[22] For the man was above forty year old on whom this miracle of healing was showed.

Here are the same verses (Acts 4:18-22) from the King James Bible:

The English Hexapla (1841) – 1380 WICLIF to 1611 AUTHORIZED

Today I wanted to tell you about an interesting book published in 1841 called The English Hexapla. It is a parallel Bible showing the text of the New Testament from six of the earliest English Bible translations. It starts with the 1380 Wiclif (also spelled Wycliffe) and ends with the 1611 Authorized (also called the King James Version). The title page is shown below:

It is very helpful in comparing these early English Bibles. I wanted to show you just how different the 1380 Wiclif is compared to the 1534 Tyndale. For one thing, these New Testaments are 150 years apart. Also, the 1380 Wiclif is written in Middle English and the 1534 Tyndale is written in Early Modern English. To help you understand I have chosen a well-known verse from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2. The image below shows the 1380 Wiclif in column 1 and the 1534 Tyndale in column 2.

and though I GAVE…

“and though I GAVE my BODY even that I BURNED, and yet had no LOVE, it profiteth me NOTHING” — 1 Corinthians 13:3 (Tyndale NT, 1534)

William Tyndale died in this way in 1536 after being condemned as a heretic. Death by fire was a common form of execution in those days.

Below are the famous beginning verses of 1 Corinthians from William Tyndale’s New Testament of 1534:

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Though I spake with the tongues of men and angels, and yet had no LOVE, I were even as sounding brass: or as a tinkling cymbal.

And though I could prophesy, and understood all secrets, and all knowledge: yea, if I had all faith so that I could move mountains out of their places, and yet had no LOVE, I were NOTHING.

And though I bestowed all my goods to feed the poor, and though I GAVE my BODY even that I BURNED, and yet had no LOVE, it profiteth me NOTHING.

As Tyndale translated these verses in 1 Corinthians 13, he must have known, death by fire, could be his lot. In spite of this, he endeavored on and brought the Word of God, in English, to his fellow countrymen, who were eager to receive it.

Would we sacrifice so much? Are we eager to receive God’s Word, too?
